How a $4.4M Grant Powers Telkom Kenya’s Mission to Expand Open RAN Coverage

Telkom Kenya has secured a major boost for its digital transformation journey through a $4.4 million grant from Rakuten Symphony and Airspan Networks.

This strategic investment is set to accelerate the development and deployment of Open Radio Access Network (Open RAN) technology across Kenya, promising to enhance mobile connectivity while reducing infrastructure costs.

The grant, funded by the Japanese government ($3 million) through Rakuten Symphony and the United States government ($1.4 million) via Airspan Networks, highlights Kenya’s growing prominence as a hub for telecommunications innovation in Africa.

This initiative not only reinforces Telkom Kenya’s commitment to improving digital infrastructure but also positions the country at the forefront of next-generation mobile technology.

What is Open RAN Technology?

Open RAN (Radio Access Network) technology represents a significant shift from the traditional closed systems used by many telecom operators.

It separates the hardware and software components of telecommunications infrastructure, allowing operators to integrate solutions from different vendors.

By adopting Open RAN, Telkom Kenya aims to:

  • Lower Costs: Reduce both operational and capital expenditures by avoiding reliance on proprietary systems from a single vendor.
  • Enhance Flexibility: Enable seamless integration of advanced technologies and rapid deployment of new mobile services.
  • Promote Innovation: Encourage collaboration and the development of adaptable, scalable network solutions.

This open architecture offers greater freedom, allowing telecom operators to innovate while reducing the financial burden of upgrading or maintaining their networks.

The Strategic Partnership: Telkom Kenya, Rakuten Symphony, and Airspan Networks

In January 2025, Telkom Kenya formalised a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Rakuten Symphony and Airspan Networks. This partnership focuses on knowledge transfer, development, and the testing of Open RAN technology.

Each partner brings a unique contribution to the collaboration:

  • Rakuten Symphony: Provides centralised and distributed unit infrastructure along with its Operating Support System (OSS) platform.
  • Airspan Networks: Supplies 4G and 5G radio units and mobile core solutions.
  • Telkom Kenya: Offers human resources, testing facilities, and localised operational expertise.

The partnership will establish a testing facility in Kenya to conduct field trials and network evaluations. These efforts will focus on optimising 4G and 5G technology while addressing the region’s unique connectivity challenges.

Leadership Insights: Commitment to Technological Advancement

Mugo Kibati, CEO of Telkom Kenya, highlighted the transformative potential of the partnership, stating:

“We are proud to be investing in the development of our people through collaborative testing capabilities within this consortium. This initiative allows us to explore the potential of Open RAN and its benefits for our mobile network.”

Why Open RAN Matters for Kenya

The adoption of Open RAN technology carries significant implications for the future of mobile connectivity in Kenya. This approach could play a key role in:

  • Expanding Network Coverage: Bringing reliable mobile services to underserved and rural areas.
  • Improving Service Quality: Delivering faster, more efficient network performance for customers.
  • Driving Digital Inclusion: Enabling affordable and accessible connectivity for all Kenyans.

Furthermore, as the demand for mobile data and digital services grows, Open RAN provides a scalable solution to meet future needs without incurring the high costs associated with traditional network models.
