Centenary Bank in Uganda has launched CenteWhatsApp banking, providing customers with immediate and secure access to diverse banking services via WhatsApp. 

This initiative aims to leverage WhatsApp’s popularity to extend banking services to a wider audience in Uganda, where 4.5 million use WhatsApp, but only 34% have a bank account as of 2023.

Subsequently, a menu will appear, enabling them to choose their preferred banking option and follow the prompts to complete the transaction.

Additionally, the platform enhances user confidence through features like real-time transaction notifications and the ability to block the service in case of a lost phone.

The initiative aims to redefine the banking experience by seamlessly integrating with users’ daily communication tools, ensuring convenience and accessibility.

The platform offers features such as real-time notifications and security measures, assuring customers of data privacy. 

By 2024, an estimated 7.48 million people in Uganda, comprising 14% of the population, are expected to be online. 

In 2023, 4.5 million Ugandans were active on WhatsApp, while only 34% held a bank account, with the country having 11.77 million internet users and 2.05 million social media users in January 2023.
